Other: One of Kate's most recognizable features are her freckles. They're most noticeable on her face, but are present over most of her body as well. When she's been out in the sun a lot, of course, they stand out even more than usual. They've earned her the nickname "Freckles" from one ex-lover, though she'd thank you to not utilize that particular moniker.
Kate doesn't generally spend much time thinking about her appearance. Her preferred style of dress involves jeans and fitted t-shirts or tank tops with no shoes or hiking boots, depending on her activity at the moment - anything that allows her comfort and the ability to move quickly and flexibly. She normally lets her hair air dry and wears it down and curly, pulling it back into a messy ponytail or half-ponytail when it's convenient.
Of course, Kate can also make herself up when she needs to - she's been known to straighten her hair and sport expensive jewelry, power suits, makeup, and heels when the occasion dictates. She usually does this when she's trying to impress or manipulate, or when she feels the need to seem more respectable and redeemable than her personal history suggests. Needless to say, she feels least like herself when she's made up in this way.

Personal history: Kate Austen was born in 1977 in Iowa, and was raised by her mother, Diane, and Sam Austen, the man she believed to be her biological father. Sam and Diane divorced when she was five, and Kate lived with Diane and her new husband, Wayne. Wayne was physically and emotionally abusive to Diane, and later probably sexually abusive to Kate. Kate spent much of her time dreaming of the day when she could run away from from her problems at home, from Wayne, from Iowa. When she was in her early twenties, Kate accidentally found out that Sam was not, in fact, her biological father, but that Wayne was. Infuriated that this horribly abusive man was a “part of her” and that therefore she would never be “good,” and also wanting to protect her mother, Kate orchestrated a gas explosion that blew up her childhood home, with Wayne sleeping inside. This crime, the first of many, set off a number of years of running from the law for Kate – mostly around the United States, but eventually finding her in Australia, with plans to flee to Bali. During these years of running, Kate was briefly married to a man under the alias of Monica, but she left him after telling him the truth about who she was and realizing she couldn't stay with him and live the domestic life.
Kate was captured by a U.S. Marshal in Australia and was on her way to trial in the United States when the plane she was on, Oceanic Flight 815, crashed and was stranded on a mysterious tropical island. Kate spent 108 days on the island, during which her tracking and shooting skills were valuable in many conflicts with the island's violent inhabitants. She grew close to several of her fellow survivors, even entering into a sexual relationship with one. Eventually, Kate and five other survivors were rescued and returned to the United States, where Kate stood trial for her many crimes. Upon rescue, it was incorrectly assumed that another rescued survivor, a baby named Aaron, was her son, and Kate has cared for him as her own since then.
Kate struck a deal with the prosecutor of her case: 10 years of probation in exchange for no jail time, during which she would not be allowed to leave the state of California. She and the other rescued survivors won a substantial settlement with Oceanic Airlines and are now extremely wealthy. Kate now lives with her “son,” Aaron, in a large house in the Los Angeles suburbs. She was briefly engaged to a fellow survivor, Jack Shephard, but his drinking problems and jealousy over the lover she left behind ended their relationship. A couple of the survivors believe they should go back to the island to help those still there, but Kate does not think they should. As far as the rest of the world is concerned, the rescued six are the sole survivors of the plane crash.
Skills: Kate is skilled in tracking, both animal and human, in various terrains, and can climb trees like they're nothing. She's also quite skilled with a gun, and has some self-taught hand to hand combat skills (mostly used for self-defense). She has some knowledge of explosives and how to use them. She's also passably good at golf and poker.
